Hook text videos: how to write and test scroll-stopping opening lines
A single bold line popping in word by word, with the surprise word highlighted. How to write hooks, highlight the right word, and render five versions to A/B test with AI.

The first second decides whether someone watches your video. A hook text video is the simplest way to win it: one bold line pops onto the screen word by word, with one or two words highlighted, often over a product image. It's quick to make, which means you can make five and keep the one that works.
Anatomy of a hook video
- The hook — up to 12 words, popping in word by word.
- Highlights — up to three words in your accent colour: the surprise, the number, the payoff.
- Sub line (optional) — context under ten words.
- CTA (optional) — two to four words at the end.
- Background image (optional) — your product or a relevant photo.
The whole video runs about five seconds — long enough to read, short enough to loop.
Writing hooks that work
Patterns that consistently stop the scroll:
- POV: "POV: you stopped editing videos and started shipping them"
- Surprise or contradiction: "Our best ad took four minutes to make"
- Specific number: "3 hooks we test before every launch"
- Direct callout: "If you sell on Shopify, watch this"
- Before/after in words: "From one ad a week to one a day"
Highlight the surprise word, not your brand name. In the first example, "stopped" and "shipping" carry the idea.
Our guide to short-form ad hooks goes deeper on why these patterns work and how to test them fairly.
Test, don't guess
Render five versions with different hooks and keep everything else identical — the same image, the same length, the same CTA. Run them as separate ads with the same budget, and keep the winner. Because every version renders from the same file with one line changed, the test is clean.
Make it with Claude Opus 5.5 (or any agent)
Use the free Hook Text Skill:
Make five hook videos for A/B testing, each with a different first line about saving time on video ads. Highlight one surprise word in each. 9:16, over product.png.
Your agent writes five hooks for your approval, validates their length, and renders each as an MP4. Make versions for other markets by adapting the hook, not translating it — idioms rarely survive word for word. New to this? See how Opus 5.5 makes videos.
FAQ
How many words can I highlight? Up to three — more and nothing stands out.
Does it work in Chinese, Japanese or Korean? Yes. Word-by-word reveals split CJK text naturally.
