How to turn an Instagram carousel into a Reel (without editing software)
Your carousel slides already tell a story — turn them into a vertical video with slide-in transitions and one caption per image. Here's how, and how to do it with an AI agent.

If you already post carousels, you're sitting on Reels. A carousel is a sequence of images with one idea each — exactly what a short vertical video needs. Turning slides into a reel lets the same content reach people who never swipe, and gives you a video for TikTok and Shorts too.
What the format looks like
Two to six images slide in one after another, each with one bold caption. Transparent product PNGs sit on a soft glow; photos fill the frame. About a second per slide keeps it moving — a full reel runs around six seconds.
When to use it
- Product photo sets — one benefit per image.
- Before/after or step sequences you already have as slides.
- Collections and drops — show each piece in turn.
- Repurposing a carousel that performed well.
Turn slides into a reel
- Pick the slides. Two to six. Cut any slide that only works when someone stops to read it.
- Rewrite captions for motion. One benefit per caption, under seven words. "Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours" becomes "Cold for 24 hours".
- Order for momentum. Strongest image first — it's your hook — and the clearest product shot last.
- Size for the feed. 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts; 4:5 if you also want a feed version.
Design tips
- Images with the subject in the centre survive the crop from square or 4:5 to 9:16.
- Keep captions inside the safe zone so the platform interface doesn't cover them (check here).
- Use photos you own or have a licence for; repurposing doesn't change the rights you need.
Make it with Claude Opus 5.5 (or any agent)
The free Slides to Reel Skill does this on your machine. Put your images in a folder and ask:
Turn slide1.png to slide4.png into a 9:16 reel with one benefit caption per slide, under seven words each.
The agent drafts the captions, lets you approve them, validates the images and renders the MP4 — plus 4:5, 1:1 or 16:9 versions from the same file. For other ways to animate a product, see product reveal videos and spec callout videos.
FAQ
What image types work? PNG, JPG and SVG. Transparent PNGs get a soft glow behind them.
Can I use more than six slides? The Skill takes up to six so each one gets enough screen time; split longer carousels into two reels.
